<div style="font: 12.0px 'Helvetica Neue'; line-height: 18.0px; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
In store, we have recently been stocking up on the immensely popular (and for good reason) TCG, trading card game to us not-in-the-know-type peoples, Magic: The Gathering. IN addiction to the Avacyn Restored booster packs, we have also brought in many starter decks and booster decks, for all levels of players, from the newbies (like me) to the shop's resident expert, James!</div>
<div style="font: 12.0px 'Helvetica Neue'; line-height: 18.0px; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">

Here is a list of all Magic items that we currently stock, but we also stock the official Magic: The Gathering Comic books… which are quite frankly only collected for the rare cards that come with them! Links to the whole set of stock of Dark Ascension, Innistrad, Scars of Mirrodin and Avacyn Restored are here: <a href="http://www.thecomicguru.co.uk/search.php?session_id=318961419&pubid=368">http://www.thecomicguru.co.uk/search.php?session_id=318961419&pubid=368</a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
We at the Comic Guru had a fantastic trip to the cinema on Thursday 19th 2012, for a pre-screening of AVENGERS ASSEMBLE. And here's our official review...</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
If this film proves one thing, it’s that Joss Whedon is a god among
film makers.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
From the moment the news of this film leaked I’ve been looking forward
to its release; and with the release of each solo film (<i>The Incredible Hulk</i>, <i>Iron Man
1 & 2, Thor </i>and <i>Captain America</i>)
the excitement and anticipation continued to grow. But in the back of my mind
there was a little voice of worry; after all it was such a huge concept and to
get all these characters and elements together was a mammoth task, one that
would either fail or succeed. There really was no middle ground as far as I was
concerned. And then the news that sent my anticipation into high orbit came out;
Joss Whedon would not only be directing the film, but writing it, too! Recipe
for success!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
I was <i>not</i> disappointed. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
I have always been a fan of Whedon’s work, and always been a fan of <i>The Avengers</i>, especially the early
issues (I’ll confess I’ve lost track with most of the recent stuff, and my
knowledge of current comic continuity is severely lacking), but the good thing
about this film is that you don’t need a mass amount of knowledge to understand
what’s going on. All the ground work was laid in the preceding films, of
course, but does that mean you’ll have needed to see them to follow this film?
I’d say ‘no’. The team is assembled in
such a way that you learn all you need to know when you need to know it. Whedon’s
script is as intelligent as one has come to expect; the action, pathos, humour,
drama and character development is woven so neatly together that there is not a
single moment of superfluous material. Everything written is essential to the
climax of the film. There are a few moments of quiet, but these moments are
full of wonderful character interaction and wit, and they also afford the
viewer a chance to get their breath back before the next bout of pure adrenalin
infused action.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
Many people have been concerned about Mark Ruffalo taking on the rule
of Bruce Banner, some even expecting the Hulk to be sidelined by the other
characters. Well, those fears are laid to rest. The Hulk is a key element of
the plot, and is a character that drives some of the funniest moments in the
film. I wish I could tell you what they are (I really do!), but to do so would
spoil a lot of the film. Needless to say, those scenes will have you roaring in
laughter (actually, that’s the only issue with this film I have – there are
moments in the script of comedy gold, and Whedon most certainly knew that.
Moments where the entire theatre was consumed in a tsunami of laughter. Alas,
the laughter drowns out the following few lines of dialogue – I hope those
lines were flotsam, and not essential to the plot, since no one heard them).
Raffalo plays Banner with a nice touch of charm, and mountains of humour. I was
a big fan of Edward Norton’s performance in <i>The
Incredible Hulk</i> (although, of course, it goes without saying that Bill
Bixby still maintains the crown as the definitive Banner), but Raffalo exceeds
Norton’s performance in spades. In fact, one of my concerns was that with such
a huge cast of characters and quality actors (actual movie stars!), not
everyone would get a chance to shine. I shouldn’t have worried (I must have
forgot Whedon’s skill with ensemble shows). All characters are given moments to
shine. Not only good character moments, but each one is essential to the story.
No character is left out – even the minor SHIELD characters get some great
moments (watch out for the dude who, once Nick Fury leaves the bridge of the
SHIELD boat (and <i>that</i> needs to be
seen to be believed), turns back to playing some random space invaders game –
you know, as all office workers do once the boss turns his back).</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
I really want to talk about the climax of the film, but it’s tough to
review a film that’s not out on general release yet. Let me just say – AWESOME!
In the most literal sense of the word. Throughout the film we have some real
tension between the leads (I don’t want to call them the Avengers, since
they’re not at that point), where they are forced and manipulated into
scenarios where they have to work together and put aside their personal
conflicts, but by the time we get to the final showdown, they really come
together as a team. And thus the Avengers are born; kicking serious ass, and
repelling an alien invasion on a massive scale. And doing so with a wonderful
line in humour.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<i>Avengers Assemble</i> redefines
the superhero film genre. Mark my words; this will be the benchmark by which
all future superhero films will be measured.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
Oh, and a final word. Do NOT get up out of your seat until the end
credits finish. Do so at your peril. <span style="font-family: Wingdings;">J</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So Captain Picard and the Doctor walk into a bar… well it could happen now with the crossover that could have Trekkies and Whovians wetting themselves with anticipation. From IDW comes StarTrek and Doctor Who… where Amy meets Data, where Rory meets Picard, where the TARDIS meets the Enterprise. The first issue displaying the Enterprise chasing the TARDIS through the time vortex. This officially licensed crossover has the Cybermen teaming up with their copycats, err… new partners, the Borg, to try and take over the universe. Assimilation squared. </span></div>

<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
Before 2005, there was one main name in Doctor Who books, and that was Gary Russell. Recently our Comic Guru went 'under the covers' in a series of interviews with Gary Russell ahead of our signing with the Doctor Who supremo on April the 21st.</div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
Before 2005, the biggest selling Doctor Who book, was the novelisation of the 1998 Paul mcGann movie, written by Russell himself, and with only one copy left of the fantastic novelisation, and our Gary Russell signing coming up, you might want to pick this up as soon as possible, at a price of £2.50, you really can't go wrong!</div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
There is a selection of Gary's titles (and Doctor Who magazines from his time as editor) for you all to get signed by the man himself, who some of our older members may know as 'Dick' from Famous Five, in store. So make sure to come in and have a browse before the signing which will kick off around 12:01pm.</div>

But the only reason it is… 3D.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">I've been to see Star Wars episode one, three times in 3D so far and I feel that's enough to judge this movie in what people are calling the newest 'fad' of 3D. The truth is, adding 3D to a non-3D filmed movie is hard. The dimensions are not quite right and it certainly wasn't filmed to take advantage of the 3D filming, however Star Wars, I feel, has done a good job. Although it doesn't add anything to the experience (except darkening the screen a bit more), it doesn't detract from the film either. The acting from the young Anikin is still awful and Jar Jar, if anything, is just that bit more annoying, but the movie makes up for that with it's amazing special effects, which, if you remember, were amazing for 1999, and almost 15 years later, are still amazing.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">However, if you're going to see these movies for the same reason I am, which is to see and enjoy them all on the big screen once again (and because I'm young, for the first time in regards to IV, V and VI) then do what I do… buy some 2D glasses so you can enjoy it properly.</p><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#999999;">-Adam Roach</span></p>The Comic Guruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16184566383661566640noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8658121392892830166.post-70130521439528989042012-03-04T10:31:00.004-08:002012-03-04T10:55:28.622-08:00Deadpool... It all sounds like a fantastic marriage and despite there being no script, plan or anything more than a Director being announced, there is already speculation, discussion and rumours about the newest Doctor Who movie, but big question remains… will this movie be a part of a bigger story arc, or a self-contained story? Will it be set in proper series continuity?</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">These questions throw up a lot more questions about whether it would kill the Doctor Who reboot, which is still only seven years in, or, whether it would kill or hurt the series remains to be seen, but we all hope it won't, and it shouldn't. There are advantages to either case, a movie would have production values greater than that of the last movie, greater than our only glimpse at what such a movie would look like (in the beginning of series six) and would hopefully have a great enough budget for an enemy greater than a giant bee in Victorian England, and that's all good… but there is a disadvantage to a movie. That it would be different, almost too different to entice people out of the comfort of the shows established mythos.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">We all know that Stephen Moffat an award winning producer, writer and screenwriter has been left out of the loop regarding the movie. Indeed he has gone so far as to say that there is no plan, or money in place but they still want to fly to the Moon simply because they can see it up in the sky at night. Three years is a long way away to see if Matt Smith would want to juggle Doctor on TV and Doctor on big screen and it probably wouldn't even be practical as Doctor Who films nine months of the year.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">A stand alone story within the movie would, in a way, slightly devalue the TV series. It would seem, on the surface, a quick cash in just trying to make money off of a now popular TV show and movies from TV shows have typically never been greatly received or popular among fans. Doctor Who has been different with "some" success in the 60s movies and in Paul McGann's only visual appearance as the Doctor, however a movie which is a part of the plot of the series might come off in a popular way such as David Tennant's two-parter goodbye episodes. Warner Brothers, who are releasing the movie, wouldn't want to possibly alienate new viewers to Doctor Who by having a story arch based movie, fit in to a series. This isn't smart business to have people thinking "I don't understand this, I don't like it, I'm leaving" and having a self contained story in the movie could alienate dedicated fans from even wanting to see it. It's an awkward balancing act for Warner Brothers and David Yates, which Yates hasn't helped.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">David Yates' uncanny ability to annoy fans already by saying he would 'start from scratch', suggests we're looking at a one story movie, especially considering that Matt Smith may not be the present generation by the time of the movie and may not want to couple the arduous tasks filming a movie and a TV series at the same time… he's no Michael J. Fox, and so we could even be looking at a new Doctor, new companion and if he's going that far back to scratch, a new enemy to add to a collection of hard competition. What could Yates come up with that isn't dalek, cyberman, silence, weeping angels or even our old friend Rassilon? Or maybe he might bring back the Zygons… either way, I don't think he has the imagination suited for Doctor Who if he's going to start from scratch to try and create an enemy epic enough to be on a par or beat daleks, cybermen, the Master or to a new extent, the Silence.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">Saying all this, a Doctor Who movie has all the elements to work, we saw at the beginning of series 6 in the fantastic two part opener how a widescreen film-esque picture for Doctor Who can work brilliantly, but the actors, the story and the idea has to be perfect… something David Yates has not reassured us with his 'start from scratch' remark. Does this mean a new Doctor in a new story, something not in the continuity of Doctor Who? The 1998 movie with Paul McGann started with Sylvester McCoy and when RTD brought the show back in 2005, it wasn't starting from scratch, it was continuing a story, losing none of the charm of the show… Yates needs to recognise the importance of continuity, and so soon after the 50th anniversary, too!</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">Time has shown that movies that follow the continuity of the TV shows they are from are ultimately more successful, and just plain better than stand alone movies with a whole new cast to play the characters. Sorry, but I want my Doctor in the movie to be the Doctor at the time, so don't think about bringing in some heartthrob from Hollywood to play the Doctor, it simply wouldn't work. So why ruin Doctor Who with a movie? Doctor Who is already a commercial success and doesn't need a movie to become even better. The fans of the show are more dedicated than most every other TV show out there, so don't try and cash in on the movie just for the sake of a movie. If the movie will happen, it needs to be in continuity and Yates needs to be told what to avoid when making this movie… so could someone please give Yates a few box sets to do his research, then I'll trust him.</p><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica"><span class="Apple-style-span" Novel and CD Signing with Author and Rap Star Terry Cooper on November 19thJust when you though it was over for the exclusive signings for 2011, Comic Guru throws you yet another exclusive event in the form of our Kangazang! signing on November 19th!<br /><br /><div class="description summary">Terry Cooper will be joining us to sign his brilliant Sci Fi Comedy Novel and the CD Adaptation Starring Colin Baker the 6th Doctor ahead of the launch of the second book early next year. Not only will he be signing copies but he'll be taking orders for book two as well and seeing whether a second adaptation featuring the dulcet tones of Colin Baker is indeed feasible. I certainly hope it is. The CD was brilliant as was the book. On the day we will be giving away a free 6th Doctor print with every set of the Book and CD that is purchased. A unique little gift that celebrates not only the brilliance of Colins portrayal of the 6th Doctor but also the lunacy of Kangazang itself. Go Spacehopper Go! The print is very limited so its available on a first come first served. Pre book by giving me a ring at the shop. 02921328434<br /><br /></div>The Comic second season and an award winning comic line, you could be forgiven for think Robert Kirkman has taken the Walking Dead as far as it could go. But it seems that there is some embalming fluid left to be squeezed out of this undead baby, with a trilogy of novels recently announced that will deal with the back story of some of the series most memorable characters. With that in mind, From The Vault is proud to announce the first in this trilogy with The Walking Dead: Rise Of The Governor. <p class="MsoNormal">People unfamiliar with the series will not be alienated by this story, which details the origins of the vicious psychopath that Rick and Co encounter on their travels. Considering its comic roots the story translates well into the prose medium. Written by Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga, this book will please both fans of the series and newcomers alike. </p> <p class="MsoNormal">Comic Guru currently has the hardcover version in stock, priced at £18.99. The HC version seems to be surprisingly hard to get hold of in the UK, so you’d better move quick if you want to get your hands on one.</p>The Comic
