Leaked Avengers art reveals enemies!

With the rumour mill for Marvel’s upcoming Avengers movie starting to build pace, some leaked concept art for the film’s computer game tie in has revealed just who Captain America and co could be squaring up against next summer. Although all indications appear to be that publishers THQ have cancelled the tie in for ‘unknown reasons’, the guys over at WouldYouKindly have released these images which show Norse god Thor squaring up to what appear to be a couple of Skrull!

For those of you who don’t know the Skrull are a race of shape shifting aliens whose previous comic appearances have seen them tangling with the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X men and the Silver Surfer. How exactly they will fit into the plot of the Avenger’s movie is still a matter of mystery, but a possible alliance with returning villain Loki can’t be ruled out at this stage.

Either way The Avengers is shaping up to be the hit film of 2012, so why not take drop into Comic Guru and pick yourself up a few back issues ahead of next summer? Kristian will be more than happy to help you out, and you can look all superior in front of your friends when you go see the film with them!

Reboots galore!

Unless you have been hiding under a comic proof rock for the past few months, you will have likely heard something about the planned series relaunches by the comic industry's 'big two' Marvel and DC. Both companies are attempting to increase their sales figures by giving fans a chance to come in on the ground level with reboots of major characters and origin stories. Ahead of these releases, Comic Guru attempts to give you a breakdown of what to expect.

First to DC, who have taken what can only be described as a 'ballistic' approach to their reboot. Starting this week every character in the DC universe is going to be rebooted, with even major players such as Batman and Superman being given a fresh start. And that's not the only fresh start DC has gone for, with many of the titles being handled by relatively unknown artists and creators. While some see this as a cynical ploy to save money, it could also provide us with some fresh and interesting takes on characters that may have gone a little stale in their old age.

Meanwhile Marvel have gone for a smaller reboot and chosen to focus on their Ultimates universe, although they did decide to kill off one of their major characters in order to get there. With Peter Parker webslinging in heaven the Spiderman mantle is being taken over by Miles Morales, whose introduction has already caused a stir amongst the mass media due to his ethnicity (half black half Hispanic) and sexuality (creators have not ruled out making the character gay in future). The Ultimates Reborn launch will see Ultimate versions of Spidey, the X men, the Ultimates and Hawkeye all hitting the stands in the next few weeks, although the 'tit for tat' nature of Marvel and DC's relationship means we can't rule out a wider scale Marvel reboot in the next few months.

So whatever your allegiance this is an exciting time to be a comic fan. Head on down to Comic Guru over the next couple of weeks and see for yourself!

'Seeker' signing September 3rd

For many horror fans, the past couple of years have been a dark (no pun intended) time for the vampire myth. The likes of the Twilight saga and The Vampire Diaries have turned everyone's favourite bloodsuckers into a collection of mopey emo kids who spend all their time pining moodily after dog faced school girls. But Andy Frankham-Allen is leading the fight back against this wave of brooding pretty boys with his new book Seeker, and Comic Guru is proud to announce that Andy will be our guest this Saturday as part of our continuing 8th anniversary countdown celebrations.

Seeker is set in primarily in Southend and follows the exploits of Willem Townsend, a London based entrepreneur who, feeling shackled by the mundane routine of his own life, embarks on a relationship with a mysterious stranger he meets over the internet. But after arranging to meet him Will and those closest to him are thrown into a world where not everything is as it seems.

Seeker is the first book of the Garden Saga series, and its potent mix of thriller, mystery and horror already has critics buzzing. And if that isn't enough for you Andy is a Cardiff based writer, meaning you will again be support local talent by coming along and joining us at Comic Guru from midday onwards.

Exclusive interview with Garth Ennis

For the past 15 years Garth Ennis has been considered one of the top comic writing talents in the industry. The multiple Eisner award winner has had a slew of hits, from his highly successful runs on Marvel's Punisher franchise and DC's Hellblazer to his own creations such as The Boys, Hitman and Preacher.
So it is with great thanks to the guys over at Talk Comix that we can bring you an exclusive interview with the man himself. During the 25 minute session Ennis discusses his interests in war and how it has affected his writing, as well as his future projects and the potential for movie versions of The Boys and Preacher.
As a huge Ennis fan I found these interviews fascinating, as it gives you an insight into how he approaches writing and what drives him as a creator. So if you're a fan of the man himself, a particular story or just a comic fan in general I can't think of a better way to spend the next 25 minutes. Enjoy!

Comic Guru's Featured Comic - The Infinite

Chances are the first word anyone will associate with Robert Kirkman is 'zombies'. Following his success with both the Marvel Zombies series and award winning comic The Walking Dead, you could forgive Kirkman for resting on his undead laurels. But with The Infinite he is moving away from the realms of the moving corpse and onto much more scifi flavoured fare.

Published by Image comics, The Infinite tells the story of Bowen, a freedom fighter who has seen civilization fall to Imperius, a time travelling megalomaniac who has used his powers to bring the world under his heel. With the war seemingly lost, Bowen acquires the time travel technology and has come back in time to enlist the aid of his 19-year-old self, in order to prevent the war he lost and the horrors of what he's lived through coming to pass. The Infinite is illustrated by long time Image cohort Rob Liefeld, whose 'Gun Show' art style works in this futuristic warzone.

While it is too early to say whether The Infinite is going to be a success, the early signs appear good. In a lesser writer's hand the story could too easily slip into another stereotypical macho mess, but Kirkman's knack for focusing on the characters means this is definitely one to watch in the coming months.

The Infinite #1 is available now from Comic Guru.

Stiff signing tomorrow (20/08/2011)

Following on from the success of last week's Interactives signing Comic Guru is proud to announce that the next guests in 8th anniversary countdown celebrations will be none other than Patrick Mongomery and Joe Glass, two of the creative minds behind Stiffs! Stiff is a dark comedy set in the hills of Wales, and follows the exploits of zombie hunter Don Daniels and his monkey sidekick Kenny. Stiffs is created and written by Glass, Montgomery and Drew Davies, with art by Gavin Mitchell and Adam Cadwell.

With only 50 copies of their flip book left, this is a great opportunity to pick up a copy and get it signed ahead of the Stiffs issue one launch from Deadstar Publishing later on this year. The signing starts at noon, and please keep in mind that in addition to supporting local talent every copy purchased will be contributing to publishing costs for the issue 1 release.

On a sadder note Comic Guru regrets to inform that Simon Williams will be unable to attend the signing tomorrow for personal reasons. We are obviously disappointed to have lost a talent of this calibre from our line up, but would like to wish Simon all the best.

Captain America: The first Avenger review

In the run up to the much anticipated Avengers film, Marvel Studios have finally released the last origin story of the tale ahead of its release next summer. Captain America: The first Avenger grants us a look into the beginnings of Earth’s most noble hero while maintaining the recent Marvel pattern of giving us a film that is not only well paced and action packed, but also true to the original text.

Set in the middle of the Second World War, Captain America follows the path of a young recruit by the name of Steven Rogers (Chris Evans) whose frail physique means he is forced to watch on the sidelines as the rest of his generation heads off to fight the Fuehrer. But after being given the chance to volunteer for a secret project by Dr Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci), Rogers is injected with a serum which increases every physical attribute to superhuman levels. Under the command of Colonel Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones), the newly crowned Captain America is pitted against Nazi Johann Schimdt (Hugo Weaving), a high ranking Nazi officer with a few hidden surprises of his own.

One thing that will become apparent is that this is a much simpler concept than some of the other Marvel titles of recent years. There is no damnation of the military-industrial complex here, nor will you find any grand journeys of self discovery and humility. At its heart, Captain America is decidedly old school, a throwback to the simplicity of old westerns where you could cheer the good guy and boo the baddie. Given its 1940s setting this style works well, giving us an uncomplicated, noble hero to see us through. Visually the film owes more to the like of Band of Brothers and Inglorious Basterds than it does Thor or Iron man, with Joe Johnson and his team having done a great job of recreating the look and feel of both the period and the conflict.

As Captain America, Evans always had a tough job on his hands. If played wrongly the character could have come across as boring or self righteous, but he manages to tread the line and bring us a Cap who is both noble and naive, a man who wants to do the right thing no matter what it costs him personally. Jones snaps and snarls his way through the film as Colonel Phillips, while Weaving brings a healthy dose of megalomania to the murderous Schmidt. Balancing out all the testosterone is relative unknown Hayley Atwell as English intelligence officer and love interest Peggy Carter, who along with good supporting turns from the likes of Tucci and Dominic Cooper does a nice job of keeping the whole thing ticking over.

All this said CA isn’t without its flaws. A slightly ponderous middle third means there are some who could feel a little bored, while the lack of certain characters will no down have some fanboys reaching for their keyboards with rage. In addition the final climactic battle felt a little stale after the build up, and seemed to be little more than a set up for the Avengers film. But overall this is a super hero film of the rarest breed, one that isn’t about hidden commentaries or the internal conflicts of the protagonist but instead focuses on the classic battle of good vs. evil, wrapped in a sugary coating of comic goodness.

And for that, I salute them.

Henry Cavill as Superman. Wow!

The new Supes costume seems to have scales all over it. It would have made excellent material for both Thor and Captain Americas costume. Possibly even closer to the original. The image is gorgeous but so were the images from Superman Returns.
