Avengers vs X-Men!

When the Phoenix is coming back to Earth and is assumed to want to take Hope Summers as it's host, the Avengers and the X-Men have different theories over what it means. The X-Men believe it is a sign of the re-emergence of the mutant species, but the Avengers believe it means the Earth's destruction is nigh. The X-Men want to prepare Hope, the Avengers to hide her before the Phoenix arrives.

This series promises to be, frankly, epic. Iron Man fights Magneto by siphoning magnetic energy from Jupiter. Colossus fights Red Hulk and threatens Utopia's existence, and this is just the beginning in the tie ins of AvX, Secret Avengers, Wolverine and the X-Men, X-Men Legacy and more.

This series is currently #1 on our Top 25 and for good reason! Check it out and order now, before all of our stock is gone and follow the story of who is right and who is wrong? Will the Phoenix destroy Earth or does the Phoenix Force symbolise mutant kind's re-emergence!? Find out!

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE - Pre-Screening Review

We at the Comic Guru had a fantastic trip to the cinema on Thursday 19th 2012, for a pre-screening of AVENGERS ASSEMBLE. And here's our official review...

If this film proves one thing, it’s that Joss Whedon is a god among film makers.

From the moment the news of this film leaked I’ve been looking forward to its release; and with the release of each solo film (The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 1 & 2, Thor and Captain America) the excitement and anticipation continued to grow. But in the back of my mind there was a little voice of worry; after all it was such a huge concept and to get all these characters and elements together was a mammoth task, one that would either fail or succeed. There really was no middle ground as far as I was concerned. And then the news that sent my anticipation into high orbit came out; Joss Whedon would not only be directing the film, but writing it, too! Recipe for success!

I was not disappointed.

I have always been a fan of Whedon’s work, and always been a fan of The Avengers, especially the early issues (I’ll confess I’ve lost track with most of the recent stuff, and my knowledge of current comic continuity is severely lacking), but the good thing about this film is that you don’t need a mass amount of knowledge to understand what’s going on. All the ground work was laid in the preceding films, of course, but does that mean you’ll have needed to see them to follow this film? I’d say ‘no’.  The team is assembled in such a way that you learn all you need to know when you need to know it. Whedon’s script is as intelligent as one has come to expect; the action, pathos, humour, drama and character development is woven so neatly together that there is not a single moment of superfluous material. Everything written is essential to the climax of the film. There are a few moments of quiet, but these moments are full of wonderful character interaction and wit, and they also afford the viewer a chance to get their breath back before the next bout of pure adrenalin infused action.

Many people have been concerned about Mark Ruffalo taking on the rule of Bruce Banner, some even expecting the Hulk to be sidelined by the other characters. Well, those fears are laid to rest. The Hulk is a key element of the plot, and is a character that drives some of the funniest moments in the film. I wish I could tell you what they are (I really do!), but to do so would spoil a lot of the film. Needless to say, those scenes will have you roaring in laughter (actually, that’s the only issue with this film I have – there are moments in the script of comedy gold, and Whedon most certainly knew that. Moments where the entire theatre was consumed in a tsunami of laughter. Alas, the laughter drowns out the following few lines of dialogue – I hope those lines were flotsam, and not essential to the plot, since no one heard them). Raffalo plays Banner with a nice touch of charm, and mountains of humour. I was a big fan of Edward Norton’s performance in The Incredible Hulk (although, of course, it goes without saying that Bill Bixby still maintains the crown as the definitive Banner), but Raffalo exceeds Norton’s performance in spades. In fact, one of my concerns was that with such a huge cast of characters and quality actors (actual movie stars!), not everyone would get a chance to shine. I shouldn’t have worried (I must have forgot Whedon’s skill with ensemble shows). All characters are given moments to shine. Not only good character moments, but each one is essential to the story. No character is left out – even the minor SHIELD characters get some great moments (watch out for the dude who, once Nick Fury leaves the bridge of the SHIELD boat (and that needs to be seen to be believed), turns back to playing some random space invaders game – you know, as all office workers do once the boss turns his back).

I really want to talk about the climax of the film, but it’s tough to review a film that’s not out on general release yet. Let me just say – AWESOME! In the most literal sense of the word. Throughout the film we have some real tension between the leads (I don’t want to call them the Avengers, since they’re not at that point), where they are forced and manipulated into scenarios where they have to work together and put aside their personal conflicts, but by the time we get to the final showdown, they really come together as a team. And thus the Avengers are born; kicking serious ass, and repelling an alien invasion on a massive scale. And doing so with a wonderful line in humour.

Avengers Assemble redefines the superhero film genre. Mark my words; this will be the benchmark by which all future superhero films will be measured.

Oh, and a final word. Do NOT get up out of your seat until the end credits finish. Do so at your peril. J

Star Wars 3D review

For those of us who were too young too appreciate, not born yet or just love this iconic series so much, the re-introduction of Star Wars to our movie screens is more than welcomed, it's anticipated. But the only reason it is… 3D.

I've been to see Star Wars episode one, three times in 3D so far and I feel that's enough to judge this movie in what people are calling the newest 'fad' of 3D. The truth is, adding 3D to a non-3D filmed movie is hard. The dimensions are not quite right and it certainly wasn't filmed to take advantage of the 3D filming, however Star Wars, I feel, has done a good job. Although it doesn't add anything to the experience (except darkening the screen a bit more), it doesn't detract from the film either. The acting from the young Anikin is still awful and Jar Jar, if anything, is just that bit more annoying, but the movie makes up for that with it's amazing special effects, which, if you remember, were amazing for 1999, and almost 15 years later, are still amazing.

However, if you're going to see these movies for the same reason I am, which is to see and enjoy them all on the big screen once again (and because I'm young, for the first time in regards to IV, V and VI) then do what I do… buy some 2D glasses so you can enjoy it properly.

Deadpool... DEAD!?

With part three of Deadpool: DEAD coming out VERY soon, I thought it appropriate to review the entire story arch of my favourite schitzo, Wade Wilson.

The current story arc has seen Deadpool go from literally atoms after being punched by an enraged Hulk, to being in a mental institution in England, where his doctor fell in love with him and kept severed parts of Deadpool past in a fridge, which eventually turned into… Evil Deadpool. Yes, a MORE evil, psychotic, unkillable merc with a deformed mouth… except this one died, from a dart to the neck from a mysterious source. Deadpool wants this serum, not to kill mutants or threaten the Earth… but to finally DIE.

Will he die? Will he finally get his big date with his girlfriend, Death? Will Hydra Bob finally never have to worry about being shot in the leg ever again? And what will the Uncanny X-Force do without their resident psychopath!? Find out in part 3 of 3 of Deadpool: DEAD.

(all available in store and online)

Stiffs!

STIFFS

2012; the year of the apocalypse! And it's cooler than that, because it's the year of the ZOMBIE apocalypse, and it's happening everywhere, even in South Wales… where, this fantastic 5 part comic is set!

Stiffs, from Dead Star Publishing and the writer of 'The Pride' tells the story of one man in a zombie apocalypse in South Wales… one man, and his monkey. But this book is not one of doom and gloom, far from it, there are moments of sheer hilarity, wittiness and plot twists which demand you read more.

The characters are a good group of Welsh folk, and undead Welshmen and Welshladies… oh, and a monkey. Did I mention our monkey friend Kenny McMonkey? The pot smoking, "brains" (no pun intended) of the operation and best friend of our lead character who is, you guessed it, a zombie hunter. Not even Planet of the Apes offers you a zombie hunting, pot smoking, sass talking, über cool monkey like Kenny. This book is easily one of our most looked forward to releases in the comic book world, and from a fantastic independent company, what more could you want!?

We're excited to announce we will be having an in store signing for this fantastic independent comic in the very near future, so please keep an eye on our blog here, or through or YouTube, Twitter, Facebook or website for more information.

Pre orders available through http://www.thecomicguru.com soon! E-mail Guru@TheComicGuru.co.uk for more information, or tweet us your questions @TheComicGuru.

Shaun of the Dead (Graphic Novel)

Shaun of the Dead Graphic!

What if Dawn of the Dead had a funny, British twist? That is what Shaun of the Dead is about. One man, the love of his life, his best mate, the local pub and a zombie apocalypse taking over Britain!

Based on the movie by Simon Pegg, and adapted by Chris Ryall, this fantastically drawn graphic follows the same story as the film, but in many, many ways is funnier and in every way just as brilliant, right down to the cricket bats.

Published by IDW, this is one of the few left for sale in general retail as this is now out of print and becoming somewhat of a collector's item. It is available in store or online:
