Comic Guru 8th Birthday Party!

As you may or may not already be aware, a very special date is fast approaching. October 4th (this Tuesday) is a very special day in the mythology of Comic Guru. Not only does it mark the 8th anniversary of the shop, it is the 40th birthday of the Guru himself, Mr Kristian Barry. So to celebrate this monumental occasion we've decided to throw a little shindig. With drinking games and everything.

The party is on October 8th at the shop and will start at 7pm. The proposed finish time is still unknown, but will likely be whenever Kristian loses the power of speech/sight/consciousness. Invites are already winging their way to all of our standing order customers via snail mail, but if you are not currently one of our faithful customers and don't want to miss out on all the fun then head into the shop in the next week and get yourself a standing order. With the biggest collection of comics anywhere in Europe I'm sure you'll find something you like. Once a standing order is set up your golden ticket will be secured. Hope to see you there.

Friday Video Club - The Visit

This week’s Friday video takes a slightly paranormal twist with short film ‘The Visit’. Written and directed by Lisa Jackson and produced by the National Film Board of Canada, The Visit is based upon an alleged UFO encounter in the Ahtahkakoop Reserve in Saskatchewan, Canada in 1996. The film features genuine audio from the interview with witnesses Barry Ahenakew and Kimowan Ahenakew. The Visit is an interesting tale of a UFO sighting with some fantastic hand drawn animation to accompany it.

From The Vault - Halo Figurines

Deviating from tradition a little with this week’s From The Vault, we turn our attention not to comics but to collectables. Comic Guru has a wide selection of T-shirts, badges, statues and figurines in stock from a range of franchises, and any scifi or comic fan worth his salt is bound to find something they like. One such franchise is Halo, and we are proud to introduce a range of figurines depicting some of the most memorable characters in the universe.

Released in honour of the Halo Anniversary video game on November 15th, the Halo Anniversary figurines are 5 high quality models made by the good people over at Macfarlane’s Toys. In addition to series protagonist Master Chief the series also includes the Chiefs’ AI companion Cortana (with light up base), ODST trooper Dutch, Covenant turncoat Arbiter and an alien Grunt. All figures are approximately 5 inches tall and are priced at £12.99. With the game’s release fast approaching we are expecting these to sell out fast so if you’re interested in owning a collectable from this video game phenomenon head on over to the Comic Guru site or store as soon as you can.

This Week In Geek (26/09/2011)

Monday 26th

Thor (DVD/Blu Ray)

- Kenneth Brannaghan’s take on everyone’s favourite Norse God hits Blu Ray and DVD today. If you missed this in the cinema this is your chance to make amends for that huge mistake.

Cannibal Holocaust: Ruggero Deodato's New Edit (Limited Edition) (Blu-ray)

- One of the banned ‘Video Nasties’ of the 1980s, Cannibal Holocaust remains one of the cult horror films of its generation. This Blu Ray release apparently shows the film faithful to the director’s original vision, and is probably best left alone if you’re of a nervous disposition.

Big Bang Theory season 4 (DVD)

- The latest season of the hit US comedy which put the chic in geek goes on sale today, with 24 episodes of hyper neurotic geniuses mocking one another spread across 4 discs.

Wednesday 28th

Latest DC reboot titles (Comics)

This week’s batch of new DC releases see The Flash, Superman and the Dark Justice League make their comic ‘debuts’

Curse of the Wendigo trade paperback (Comics)

- The Walking Dead’s Charlie Adlard takes a break from zombies to draw another mythological beast in this collection from Dynamite.

Ghostbusters #1 (Comics)

- Ray, Peter, Egon and Winston return in this all new series from IDW. Who are you going to call? You’ll have to read it and find out!

Fades (TV)

- Catch episode 2 of this new supernatural drama on BBC3 at 10pm. If you missed episode 1 it is currently on the BBC iPlayer.

Friday 30th

Shark Night (Cinema)

- Sexy teens being eaten by a variety of sharks while swimming in a lake. Utterly ridiculous and probably entertaining, this B movie horror is showing in both 3D and 2D.

Red State (Cinema)

- Kevin Smith’s latest offering, this dark horror is a million miles away from Clerks and Mallrats. Early reviews have been encouraging.

ICO & Shadow Of The Colossus HD Collection (Video Game)

- This PS3 exclusive packages the first two of a series which concludes with The Last Guardian early next year. Originally released on the PS2, the HD remake merely adds another layer of gloss to two games that remain some of the best ever released. An essential purchase.

Friday Video Club

This week’s Friday Video Club comes from the guys over at How it Should Have Ended, a group dedicated to pointing out the logic holes in a variety of films, TV series and video games. Their full back catalogue is available via Youtube (check the official Comic Guru Youtube account for the link) and is seriously worth checking out. But with the DVD/Blu Ray releases close at hand I thought this one had particular relevance. So without further ado I give you Captain America: The First Avenger – How it should have ended!
